Position: Blocker, Beginner Pivot
Why roller derby?
When I moved to Kalamazoo in 2010 I really needed something to do outside of the office. I had never skated until the day before I went to my first practice. Everything hurt for a solid six months, but it was worth it. I found my Kalamazoo family in Killamazoo.
What’s the origin of your derby name?
I took inspiration from the jazz singer Billie Holiday. She was a bit of a tragic figure, but she did things her way and I admire her tenacity.
Knees, shoulders, tailbone…they all blend together. (In memory, not physically. That would be gross.)
What wheels do you use?
G-Rods and Atom Jukes.
What’s your non-derby life like?
I’m a copywriter at a digital advertising agency. The company I work for went global last year, but all that means is that I get to eat my weight in Pop-Tarts should I ever feel the urge. I also have a pretty awesome pug named Bill Murray. We go on adventures.
Advice for someone interested in derby?
Don’t give up. It’s going to hurt. It’s going to be difficult. Some days, it’s going to seem like you’re not getting anywhere. Then one day, it’ll click. The light bulb will go on and you’ll realize this is the best thing you’ve ever done. Don’t give up.
